In 1918 Ezra Pound coined the term ‘Victoriana’ as a way of pejoratively characterising the Victorian past: ‘For most of us, the odour of defunct Victoriana is so unpleasant … that we are content to leave the past where we find it’ (cited in Gardiner, 2004: 168). In stark contrast to Pound’s confident marginalisation of the Victorian past at the outset of the twentieth century, a steady interest in things Victorian gained momentum in the second half of the same century until, in the final decades, a fascination with the period invaded film, television, trends in interior decoration, fashion, genealogy, advertising, museums, histori-cal re-enactments, politics and scholarship about the Victorian period.

Published in 1852, the anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom's Cabin by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe is credited with helping fuel the abolitionist cause and laying the groundwork for the Civil War. Stowe, a Connecticut-born teacher at the Hartford Female Academy and an active abolitionist, featured the character of Uncle Tom, a long-suffering African-American slave around whom the stories of other characters revolve. It was the best-selling novel of the 19th century and the second best-selling book of that century, following the Bible.

This book is an examination of these destructive patterns through down-to-earth examples, and a discussion of how we can use what we learn to move ourselves and our society toward a more stable, less frantic, more responsible, and far more satisfying life. A life in which we are no longer compelled to damage ourselves and our environment. A life in which our parents and our children have a future.

Designers of technology have a major responsibility in the current age. Their designs can have tremendous effects on society, in both the short and the long term. In fact, sustainable development itself has all the characteristics of a design project, albeit a vast one. But a failed product design here will be not just be unsuccessful in the market - it will have far-reaching consequences. It is our common responsibility to make the project successful. Technology has played an important role in creating the problems that we now face; but it will also play an important role in solving them. But this does not mean the technological fix will be easy.

Patrick Caron and Jean-Marc Châtaigner

Guangjin Zhao

Based on a large volume of experimental data collected in the author's lab, it demonstrates how lithium ion batteries (LIBs) reuse can effectively cut the cost of Electric Vehicles (EVs) by extending the service lifetime of the batteries. In addition to the cost benefits, Dr. Guangjin Zhao discusses how recycling and reuse can significantly reduce environmental and safety hazards, thus complying with the core principles of environment protection: recycle, reuse and reduce.

Hans Schattle

This lively and invigorating book explores the complex ways that globalization has profoundly affected the once-static nationally defined boundaries of citizenship. Hans Schattle explores the roles of numerous social movements and advocacy groups at the heart of events such as the “Arab Spring” revolutions, the global contestation on the role and tactics of WikiLeaks.

SJ, P. Johannes Ehrat

Power of Scandal finds that the very idea of 'scandal' is derived not from an event, but from public opinion - which, in turn, is construed by media narratives. Scandal is powerful because of its ability to challenge institutions by destabilizing their legitimacy. Ehrat applies classic semiotic and pragmatic thought to contemporary media issues, mainly moralist discourse from sex abuse cases to the phenomenon of televangelism. Arguing that sociological and communications studies of scandal have ignored the media's constructed nature, Ehrat focuses on how meaningful public narrative is produced.

Is for teachers and teacher educators working in communities that educate children who do not speak English as a first language. At the center of the book are findings from a four-year critical ethnographic case study of a Canadian high school with a large number of emigrant students from Hong Kong and rich descriptions of the multitude of ways teachers and students thought about, responded to, and negotiated the issues and dilemmas that arose. The book is designed to help readers think about how the issues and dilemmas in the case study manifest themselves in their own communities and how to apply the insights they gain to their own teaching and learning contexts.

Debieuvre Luc

Luc Debieuvre is a French banker who between 2003 and 2005 wrote a fortnightly opinion column for the United Arab Emirate-based English-language daily "Gulf News". The period of Debieuvre's association with the newspaper has been among the most significant and memorable in recent history. The aftermath of America's War on Terror has unleashed forces that the world will have to contend with and endure long after the protagonists have left the stage. Now collated into book form for the first time, Debieuvre's chronicles provide a fascinating insight into how the shifting sands of international relations and Middle Eastern politi were perceived at the time by a writer with a uniquely Gallic perspective.

R. Douglas Arnold

Is the first large-scale examination of how local media outlets cover members of the United States Congress. Using three samples of local newspapers from across the country, Arnold analyzes all coverage over a two-year period--every news story, editorial, opinion column, letter, and list. Examination of an even larger sample, sixty-seven newspapers and 187 representatives, shows why some newspapers cover legislators more thoroughly than do other papers. Arnold then links the coverage data with a large public opinion survey to show that the volume of coverage affects citizens' awareness of representatives and challengers.  The analysis also confirms that only those incumbents or challengers in the most competitive races, and those who command huge sums of money, receive extensive coverage.
